Fostex’s original MR-8, released back in 2003, was just one of a fleet of personal multitrackers based on CompactFlash media. Given the rather cumbersome ‘fixed’ nature of an internal hard drive, CompactFlash represented the ideal upgrade and replacement for cassettes: it was relatively cheap and portable, and as long as you kept buying additional CompactFlash cards, you never ran out of hard disk space. However, when it came to a closer inspection of sound quality, CompactFlash had some fundamental problems. With a restricted amount of storage space (usually between 128MB and 512MB), some inevitable data compression was required, which in turn compromised audio quality.
