Yamaha has given its active nearfield monitors a facelift in a bid to capture a bigger slice of market-share pie. Max Green listens to the results.

In the uniform and relatively slowmoving world of studio monitor speakers few products ever achieve legendary status, but the Yamaha NS10M Studio model is an exception to that rule. Almost singlehandedly, the speaker revolutionised the concept of nearfield monitoring during the 1980s, when these compact black boxes with their distinctive, white, low-frequency driver cones became almost universal in major recording studios.
