When you need to swap between CD and phono sound sources on your hi-fi, you simply turn the selector knob on your amp. The same goes for the volume levels, and some of you will even have one of those switches that enables you to drive speakers in different rooms. It’s pretty standard stuff, isn’t it? So, why do so many of us put up with re-patching devices every time we want to do something similar in our project studios? Why scroll through settings in complicated music-editing programs or fiddle about with a mouse when it would be simpler to use a knob or a switch? It’s even worse when you have to dive into that dusty rat’s nest of cables and leads that lurks behind most computers and effects racks.
