It would be fair to say that the compact mixer took a knock when the all-singing, all-dancing FireWire audio interface came along. With a suitable number of inputs and mic preamps, a FireWire interface could easily replace the need for a small mixer in most project studios, although few would argue that they offered the same degree of flexibility and that all-important tactile quality. Not wanting to give up its position in the studio, however, the compact mixer has fought back, with companies such as Mackie, Phonic and Alesis adding USB or FireWire connectivity to their mixers. The Alesis MultiMix 16 then, is the latest in this line of ‘computer-aware’ mixers, featuring a full complement of traditional mixing desk features alongside an integral effects unit and two FireWire ports.
