The move to USB- and FireWire-equipped mixers has offered many manufacturers the opportunity to reinvent and update their product ranges. Mixers from Mackie, Alesis and Phonic have all illustrated that a small, 12-input desk can be as viable a front end to your DAW as any audio interface or soundcard – proof that computer-based recording doesn’t necessarily mean forgoing a mixer. Indeed, for many users the USB mixer has become a real godsend: a collection of mic pres, connectivity with your DAW, traditional studio monitoring options (including the all-important control room level), and, let us not forget, physical faders – all in one convenient package.
