Marshall Electronics MXL V6
Forget about waiting for your classic mic to warm up – MXL’s V6 promises the sound of valves in a completely solid-state package. Mark Cousins assesses the results…
Price: £199.00
Manufacturer: Marshall Electronics
Website: http://www.mxlmics.com
Although the cost of large-diaphragm condensers has tumbled over the last couple of years, the price of valve-based designs seems to remain somewhat higher than their solid-state counterparts. The expense of producing valve microphones is largely to do with the obligatory power supply and the valves themselves, but the results more than justify the extra money involved. The Holy Grail of microphone design is, therefore, to produce a microphone with the body and depth of valves using only solid-state electronics – get this right and you’ll have the sound of a microphone several hundred pounds greater than its retail price.
