Over the last few years we’ve seen the gap between the project studio and professional recording facilities getting narrower, with affordable capacitor microphones, DAWs and a host of other software and hardware devices changing the perceived quality of the music recorded in either environment. However, one advantage that the big studios held for a long time lay in their large consoles – particularly those built by well-respected companies like SSL and, of course, Neve. Compared to the mixers in most project studios – and, indeed, some dedicated preamps, EQs and compressors – these consoles delivered the kind of quality signal path that was difficult to achieve elsewhere.
