There has been a demand in recent years for increasingly advanced modular music products to emulate – and in many cases surpass – the vintage, patchbay-operated analogue monsters of the 1960s and 1970s. The trend kicked off with more esoteric software such as Max/MSP and PD and was gradually refined to include software like Reaktor, Tassman and Arturia’s Moog Modular. These (apart from the more dedicated Moog Modular) provided environments for users to build synthesizers, instruments and effects from scratch. This is done by patching together combinations of modules, filters, oscillators and many other types of building blocks. The problem is that the software approach rather limits the possibilities for playing your sounds live. Nord saw an opportunity and created the Nord Modular.
