With most project studios now centred around an audio interface rather than a traditional console, one sad and inevitable consequence has been the demise of suitable master controls – in other words, hands-on control over levels, speaker switching, alternative monitor sources and so on. Addressing this drawback, companies such as PreSonus and SPL have released dedicated studio controllers. Indeed, even Mackie took its place on the bandwagon, introducing its infamous Big Knob controller (reviewed in Issue 20), complete with its obscenely large volume control, talkback controls and a variety of monitoring options.
