Beyerdynamic Opus 29 S
Beyerdynamic introduced the world’s first studio-quality moving-coil microphone – the M19 – in 1939, so they should know a thing or two about dynamic mics by now... Huw Price checks out the Opus 29 S.

Eugene Beyer founded Beyerdynamic in 1924, and the company is still owned by his descendants – making it the oldest audio company in the world which still retains its original ownership. Strangely, though, this innovative company stayed out of the condenser microphone market until 1975, due to the long-standing friendship between Georg Neumann and Eugene Beyer. After both their factories were bombed towards the end of World War II, the two men discussed the possibility of working together, but soon realised that they had radically different views about transducer design. Instead, it was agreed with a handshake that Beyer would produce only dynamic microphones – with Neumann sticking to condensers – and this agreement was honoured until the death of Georg Neumann in the mid-1970s.
