There’s considerably more to M-Audio’s new all-purpose three-octave keyboard than initially meets the eye... Mike Hillier takes control.

All-in-one audio/MIDI interfaces have become very popular since M-Audio first introduced Ozone, a two-octave keyboard with eight MIDI controller knobs and a two-in-two-out, 24-bit/96kHz audio interface. With so many features now incorporated into single devices, laptop musicians no longer have to carry around multiple individual pieces of equipment, whether they’re engaged in mobile recording, gigging or DJ’ing. Novation’s X-Station (reviewed in Issue 23), for example, added a hardware synth engine and built-in routable effects to an already busy audio/MIDI core.
