Kurzweil’s Variable Architecture Synthesis Technology (VAST) synth engine has been around since the 90s and is the powerhouse behind the company’s phenomenal success in the workstation synthesizer (what they’re now calling ’performance controller’) market. VAST was radical at the time due to its ability to take a sound source – multi-sample, noise or waveform – and process it using a variety of synthesis techniques.
