Kurzweil PC3X
Kurzweil’s keyboards have earned the company an enviable reputation, so how will the company’s new flagship PC3X shape up? Hollin Jones tinkles the ivories.

Kurzweil has long enjoyed a reputation as a manufacturer that manages to combine real playability with excellent sounds – two things not always found together when it comes to keyboard workstations. Often the choice of the more serious gigging musician or studio-based producer, its pianos and synths have won many fans over the years. The latest flagship workstation from the Kurzweil stable is the PC3X, an 88-note weighted-key Performance Controller Keyboard, as its makers describe it. Fully loaded with hundreds of new sounds as well as a specially designed ASIC processor, it incorporates several existing technologies (such as Kurzweil’s VA-1 Virtual Analog synth) alongside a new synthesis architecture called Dynamic VAST.
Score: 9
