For many years, DI boxes were seen merely as functional tools for impedance matching, enabling an engineer to connect high-impedance instruments such as a bass guitar to a mic preamp for recording or live sound reinforcement. Various models offered different features, from active buffering and level-matching to phase coherence, but for the most part engineers rarely got worked up over new models, relying on one or two known quality brands for their (then limited) DI needs.
