For those old enough to have been introduced to the recording process through the medium of magnetic tape, the time-stretching/pitch-shifting techniques made possible by digital technology have always had something of a magical quality about them. Although it may now be taken for granted, the breaking of the link between recording speed and pitch represented a huge technical leap when it first became possible.
