Nowadays, pitch- and tempo-manipulation tools are common features in the majority of DAWs, but the results that can be achieved with them vary tremendously. In truth, although the techniques of time compression and expansion (alongside pitch manipulation) are relatively common knowledge, creating the algorithms necessary to produce a smooth, tempo-accurate result remains a significant challenge to any R&D department. Although small alterations away from the original file’s pitch and tempo may be relatively transparent, transpositions of more than a few semitones (or percentage stretches greater than 10%) can soon sound grainy and metallic.
