E-mu PM5

E-mu’s two-way PM5 active monitors offer a beefy 80 watts per box in a space-saving package. Huw Price listens in.

Price: £350.00
Manufacturer: E-mu
Website: http://www.emu.com

E-mu made its name with analogue synths in the 1970s and sound modules such as the Proteus and the Planet Phat back in the late 1980s. The company also knew a thing or two about samplers, and many connoisseurs of the genre regarded E-mu gear as sonically superior to the ubiquitous Akais of the early to mid-90s. In fact, the company has its fingers in so many pies it was inevitable that an active monitor would augment its portfolio. The PM5 has a reasonably small ported cabinet made from MDF. The edges are rounded off in the current style to minimise diffraction, and overall they appear far smarter than the price tag would have you expect.

Score: 7
