There have been significant advances in the field of amp and effects emulation in recent years, with dedicated hardware emerging in software form, and DSP algorithms becoming increasingly sophisticated to more accurately replicate the hardware they seek to emulate. However, unlike hardware, software modelling requires you to connect your guitar to a computer, boot it up and launch the application. You also have to expect to suffer the occasional crash or system incompatibility, which alongside the risks associated with taking a laptop on the road means many musicians still prefer the reliability and durability offered by hardware.
