Dave Smith is a well-respected figure in the world of music technology. Having founded Sequential Circuits during the 1970s, he designed the Prophet 5 – the world’s first polyphonic and programmable synthesizer – back in 1977. In 1981 he played a key role in the creation and standardisation of the MIDI protocol, and in the mid 1990s went on to develop the world’s first software synthesizer that ran on a computer. More recently, claiming to have grown tired of software synths, he has returned to producing more hands-on hardware products. The first in recent years was the Evolver – a small, monophonic synth that mixes analogue and digital components with a built-in step sequencer and real-time controllers on the front.
