Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5014/5042
RND’s Portico range promises high-quality results from an all-analogue signal path. Mark Cousins plugs in.
Price: £1.00
Manufacturer: Rupert Neve Designs

Having initially concentrated on mic preamps, compressors and EQs, Rupert Neve’s Portico range now includes a number of unique audio processors, all designed with an exclusively allanalogue signal path. The two units on test here are the Portico 5042 Two Channel Tape Emulator and the 5014 Stereo Field Editor. While analogue compression and EQ is still regarded as the preferred solution for audiophilegrade signal processing, the argument isn’t as clear cut when it comes to more ‘functional’ tools like these. Can they really deliver that elusive ‘edge’ we all seem to be chasing after?
