Modern production styles demand a high degree of flexibility when working with audio – particularly with respect to its time-based properties. With tools like Beat Detective’s audio quantizing and groove analysis options, and time compression and expansion accessible from the Arrange window, Pro Tools has been a competent performer in this area. However, these tools take some mastery to use effectively and, given the extreme audio flexibility of software like Celemony’s Melodyne or Ableton’s Live, musicians are demanding an even more elastic approach to tempo and time-based audio manipulation.
