There’s an old proverb: I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand. Wise words indeed – and also the learn-by-doing approach adopted by Anthony Egizii with his CD-based interactive course on using Waves plug-ins.

As Anthony points out, achieving a professional mix is now possible using a home computer. And to prove the point he’s written six chapters, each accompanied with a CD that teaches you how to arrange, produce and mix songs in five different genres: dance, R‘n’B, country, rock and urban remix. The sixth chapter concentrates on CD mastering. The seventh CD contains the Waves plug- ins, which time-out after 14 days.

By loading the session files into your DAW, you can experiment with the tracks and instruments, all of which are produced by Anthony himself. Each time a plug-in is chosen, he provides you with a reason for doing so, along with an explanatory account of the settings used.But there is a caveat. Once used, the plug-ins time-out after 14 days.

So, is this a cynical ploy to tempt you into purchasing a set of Waves plug-ins? It’s a Catch-22 situation. Great book, but be prepared to spend more cash, because you’ll probably get hooked on the Waves experience.

8/10 Verdict: Great CD-based course on using Waves audio tools, suitable for existing users and prospective buyers alike.
