If you’ve been keeping an eye on the music software market lately, you may have noticed that a new trend is starting to emerge: an increasing number of software packages are being revamped and re-branded, with an emphasis on using them in live situations. Generally speaking, this trend is working its way up from the entry-level programs and currently seems to be sitting somewhere around the mid-range. Ignoring Ableton’s Live (which has always been focused on performance), you can see the trend most clearly in Reason 3.0 – and now in Cakewalk’s Project5 Version 2. Although they interpret the concept in rather different ways, both are aiming for the live arena as well as their more traditional studio settings.
