Phonic Corporation RoadGear 160
RoadGear looks like the perfect all-in-one sound system for musicians playing small venues – but how does it actually sound? Keith Gemmell hits the road.

Live music may have suffered a decline in recent years, but if the number of small PA systems currently appearing on the market is anything to go by, it’s making something of a comeback – at least at smaller venues such as pubs, clubs and schools. Typically, the artists performing at such venues are solo performers or small combos for whom a full-blown 1,000-watt PA system would simply be overkill. What these kinds of acts need is a compact, easy-to-carry, easy-to-set up system, rather than racks of amps, a rat’s nest of cables and stacks of heavy speakers. Audio companies were quick to identify their needs and you can now buy anything from a single powered speaker with an onboard mixer (such as the Samson XP300) to a complete all-in-one sound system such as the Phonic RoadGear, on test here.
