The concept of powering condenser microphones with batteries is not a new one. Early Neumann U87s had a battery compartment to accommodate two 22.5v flashgun batteries, and Sony’s C48 had a compartment that accepted a 9v PP3. This was a useful feature at the time these mics first emerged, since few preamps provided phantom power.
