Roland V-Synth
With increased competition from the software sector, can Roland’s new flagship synth cut the sonic mustard? Simon Trask plays a awhile.

Roland’s long and proud history as a hardware synth manufacturer means that any new flagship synth from the company has a high standard to live up to. At the same time, the hardware synth as a genre is having to justify itself in the face of competition from ever more powerful, versatile and innovative software synths. No pressure then as Roland introduces its newest flagship synthesiser, the V-Synth. It’s not a workstation synth – the company currently makes the XP-60, XP-80 and the Fantom range to satisfy workstation urges. Rather it falls into the category of a performance synth, in that it’s focused on creative sound synthesis and real-time sound manipulation via a generous assortment of front-panel knobs, buttons, sliders and other, more arcane, controllers.
