Listen to recordings of any big-name acts of the 80s and you’ll hear just how bad digital audio used to be: crunchy, brittle and lacking in warmth and detail. Things have come a long way since then, of course, although the processes of conversion – that’s getting the sound in and out of the digital domain – remain crucial to achieving a successful recording.
