Valve-based studio gear has enjoyed something of a renaissance recently, and perhaps it’s no coincidence that the valve’s rise in popularity has coincided with the ever-increasing amount of affordable digital recording systems available to professionals and hobbyists alike. Such appeal could be down to the way in which a valve colours the sounds that are passed through it, affecting harmonic transients in a way that is best summed up by its exponents as ‘valve warmth’, implying that the soft, mellow glow these tubes give off somehow finds its way into the music.
