Red5 Audio RV6
If someone offered you a large-capsule condenser microphone for £45, you might think it was a joke. But Red5 is perfectly serious about its new RV6. Huw Price listens in.

For £45 it must be dog-rough – like those early Oktavas – or sound absolutely dreadful. To our surprise, then, the build quality and finish of the RV6 is excellent. It’s a stylish look, too, reminiscent of Audio-Technica’s designs. The metal body is weighty and covered with a dark grey, metallic paint. The legends are screen-printed in silver, which makes it easy to read without appearing too flashy. Peering through the grille, the gold-plated capsule is clearly visible, with its brass annular ring suggesting a high-quality unit. Permanently charged electret mics are readily available at this price, but this is a bona fide condenser, needing 48 volts of phantom power.
