Although they perform similar tasks, the demands placed on stage mics and studio mics are surprisingly different. Take a Neumann U87, for example: countless recordings have used these as vocal microphones, but how many times have you seen them on stage? Equally, the classic SM58 remains a permanent fixture of the stage environment, yet is rarely used to record studio vocals. So, as you can see, attempting to design and build a microphone that works in both situations is an incredibly difficult task, balancing the needs of a mic that is rugged, dependable and feedback-free alongside the audiophile qualities demanded by studio recordings.
