Having seen two variations of Focusrite’s Saffire series pass through the offices of MTM, we have to admit to being somewhat intrigued by what the latest incarnation had to offer. First, of course, came the original Saffire – a unique interface (by FireWire standards) that combined integral DSP processing, low latency monitoring and a sensible – although not exhaustive – set of inputs and outputs. Then came the Saffire LE, which despite its ‘lite’ tag actually included two extra analogue inputs, but dropped the DSP processing to cater for those who didn’t need to process signals ahead of their DAW. And now we have the Saffire PRO 26 I/O – an attempt to move the interface beyond the realms of desktop recording and into the more demanding world of the multi-channel project studio.
