Specialist mics are expensive, while all-purpose mics often compromise quality. With its neutral sound, attenuation pad and high-pass filter, can Samson’s CL7 do it all? Huw Price switches over.

Samson’s origins date back to 1980, when its two founders started manufacturing low-cost wireless microphone and instrument systems in the back room of a music shop. Numerous technical advances followed, including the incorporation of DBX noise reduction, synthesised wireless with selectable frequencies, the first 19-inch rack-mount receiver and cost-effective UHF wireless for live sound applications. Samson diversified during the mid 1980s, becoming a major distributor as well as a manufacturer, subsequently launching its Audio Division in 1992.
