Back in the days of analogue tape recording, most engineers suffered problems with tape hiss. Various companies offered noise reduction solutions but the two big players were Dolby and dbx. The brains behind the dbx system was an American engineer called David Blackmer and he was a man with a mission. His theory was that it is possible to record and reproduce music with such accuracy that playback is indistinguishable from the experience of actually ‘being there’.
