In all the parp and blather that surrounds the debate about processing speeds and the merits of different computer platforms, one sometimes wonders if the main protagonists ever get round to using their machines for any serious work. If they did, they’d soon realise that whatever the length of their pipelines or the performance of their floating-point engines, the thing that really affects your work rate is the design of the human interfacing. In other words, the visual displays, keyboards, mice and other data entry devices attached to your machine.
