It’s difficult to overestimate the importance of choosing the right bass sound for a piece of music. More than simply providing the required low-end weight for a track, the bass line acts as a kind of ‘statement of intent’ in so much contemporary music. Whether it’s a fat, squelchy Minimoog designed to get people onto the dance floor, or a more considered acoustic bass preparing the ground for an extended jazz break, the bass often becomes the defining instrument within a piece of music.
