Generally speaking, most virtual instruments are based on one of two technologies: either sampling or synthesis. In the case of the virtual guitar, sample-based instruments appear to be the most common. However, although the sampled instruments usually sound more realistic, synthesized versions are often more flexible and somewhat easier to play, particularly when it comes to rhythm parts.
