Despite all its inherent sonic flaws, the sound of tape is something that continues to fascinate and intrigue a large number of recording engineers and musicians – to this day it’s not uncommon for a major release to be partially tracked onto tape before being transferred into Pro Tools for further overdubs and mixing. In truth, tape offers a musicality that digital recording can’t deliver, whether it’s a touch of saturation softly compressing some drums, a few extra harmonics adding body to a bass guitar or an acoustic piano wrapped in a soft blanket of noise.
