Studio Stories by David Simons
Generally speaking, books about recording are not the kind you read from cover to cover in one go, no matter how well they’re written. Studio Stories is different. It’s the story of New York’s recording history, thoroughly researched by the author, David Simons, and related in a series of interviews by the producers,
city’s studios.
For example, veteran engineer Frank Laico explains how he created one of the world’s finest natural live chambers in an empty basement in Columbia’s 30th Street studio. And Tony Bennett, who used it to enhance his voice throughout his early career, tells us why he wouldn’t record anywhere else.
Of 16 studios, all located within blocks of each other, only a few survive today, but for over 30 years they were central to the American music industry. With unique-sounding rooms, custom-made equipment and inventive engineers, each studio had a distinctive sound.
Tales from sessions with artists such as Sinatra, Dylan, The Ramones and Madonna are here in abundance in what amounts to a darn good read.
9/10 Verdict: An extremely fascinating read for anybody interested in studio recording, young or old, pro or amateur.
Score: 9/10
