Like most samples developers, EastWest prides itself on the audio fidelity of its products – you’d be shocked if you found distortion, sample glitches or obtrusive compression in something like Hollywood Strings or Quantum Leap Pianos! However, as many musicians will testify, a little bit of grit and distortion in the right place can have a big and positive effect on the ‘attitude’ of a piece of music. Realising how important these sounds are, Doug Rodgers and David Fridmann have put together an aptly titled collection of samples exploring the extremes of lo-fidelity sound: The Dark Side
