While software synthesis is undoubtedly a good thing, offering incredibly powerful, inexpensive systems which would be impossible or unfeasible to create in hardware, it does have one major drawback – no knobs! At least no physical knobs. Although the user interfacing on most soft instruments is now generally pretty good, having to tweak controls with the mouse doesn’t make for intuitive operation. Anyway, there’s something a little more inspiring about the touch of finger on fader and digit on dial.
