With our computer processors getting hot and fidgety as more and more instruments and effects are loaded into our plug-ins folders, the idea of a single software synth that ‘does everything’ has undeniable appeal. Of course, if the device in question relied on processing to re-create each of the major types of sound synthesis – subtractive, FM, wavetable, modelling and so on – the burden on our hard-pressed machines would hardly be diminished. Clearly, for any ‘one-box’ approach to synthesis to be feasible, it has to rely on the use of sampled instruments, where the processing work has already been done.
