Promising the ultimate in authenticity, could Velvet become the king of virtual electric pianos? Mark Cousins goes soft...

The sounds of the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric piano have been the subjects of renewed interest over the last five years. Maybe it’s because the original instruments are so hard to come by (having gone out of production many years ago), or the fact that their timbres fit in so well with the instrumentation of modern music, but either way, there can be few more satisfying instruments for a keyboardist to play than the Rhodes or Wurlitzer. Of course, if you can’t lay your hands on the real thing (or you want something considerably more portable) there are a number of different virtual versions currently on the market, including Logic Pro’s EVP88, Native Instruments’ Elektrik Piano, and now, Digidesign’s Velvet.
