V-moda crossfade LP headphones

Although these cans are not specifically aimed at studio-based musicians or producers, they gave us enough cause for second glances to gain a place in these review pages – not least because of their contemporary look, excellent build quality and accurate low-frequency response. We’ll look at each in turn, but it’s safe to say even at this point that they won’t do any injustice to your studio.

Arriving in a solid and well- designed carry case/box, what you get along with the cans themselves are two leads, adaptor jack, cleaning cloth and a registration code that entitles you to ‘membership benefits’ via the v-moda website. A one-year guarantee and lifetime 50% discount on replacement phones – should you damage them – is also part of the price.

The two (Kevlar-reinforced) leads are explained thus: one is a straightforward jack-to-jack (gold-plated, 3.5mm), the other retains these specs, but throws a three-button remote control and a mic into the equation. This enables you to use the headphones in conjunction with Apple’s iPhone (3GS) and some other devices to take calls – in stereo, of course.

But while this is undoubtedly handy, the main selling point for people in our line of work is, naturally, sound quality. Designed in conjunction with ‘world- renowned musicians, producers and DJs’, the Crossfades proved to be extremely comfortable, effective isolators, and, above all, capable of accurately reproducing deep bass and clear highs (5Hz–30kHz) while retaining a sense of air and space. And for that they get our vote… LB

8/10 - Multi-purpose cans that are equally at home whether you’re on the stage, in the studio or on the move.

Score: 8/10
