There’s no doubt about it: getting a good vocal sound can be one of the hardest tasks in mixing. Assuming you’ve got a good vocalist, a little compression might be all that is required, but even in these situations, you’ll need a lot more than the bog standard compressor included with most DAWs. What’s more likely, however, is that your vocal requires some serious attention: sloppy intonation, excessive sibilance and breath noises alongside a generally poor timbre thanks to your one and only mic not complementing the singer’s voice! OK, maybe things aren’t that bad, but it just goes to show how difficult a polished vocal performance can be to achieve. Thankfully, however, help is at hand…
