In contemporary pop music, the vocal part is easily one of the most important factors in determining the popularity of a song. While many singer-songwriters would have you believe that it is the words themselves that are the most important, it is clear from the insipid nature of the lyrics in most chart tracks – even those penned by the most successful self-professed songwriters – that it is the melody and rhythm of the vocal part that define a chart hit and not its poetic content.
