Doubling a vocal – usually through the process of recording a vocalist one or more times over their original take – has remained one of the most popular ways of ‘fattening up’ a vocal performance. Even artificial means of creating the same effect – using a delay line and/or pitch shifting to create artificial double-tracking (or ADT) – are a staple part of any studio or live engineer’s processing repertoire. However, with the rise of voice-modelling software and hardware, the process of voice double-tracking has become a significantly more advanced and flexible process, with the option of creating virtual ‘doubles’ of the original vocal performance, each with subtle timing, pitch and gender variants of the original take.
