Samson Audio VR88
Samson is getting serious about studio-quality mics and the VR88 is one of its hot new products. Huw Price is foiled again.
Price: £349.00
Manufacturer: Samson Audio

The ribbon transducer – in this case a Japanese-made 2 micron-thick strip of aluminium – is a proven technology for converting sound waves into electrical current, but the signal levels produced are extremely low. The obvious solution to this shortcoming, therefore, must be an onboard preamp to boost the signal and to interface with various microphone preamp impedance characteristics. But if it was that easy more companies would be doing it, and the fact that they’re not makes the Samson VR88 something of a rarity.
Score: 9
