The brainchild of one Richard Waters in the 1960s, the Waterphone is a truly unique instrument, the music of which has been compared to the sound of humpback whales. Its dissonant tones are used widely in fi lm and TV and it is often referred to as ‘the Matrix effect’. The instrument is, in fact, a stainless steel and bronze acoustic tonal-friction instrument that utilises water in its base to bend notes and create water echoes.
