Everyone who works with digital audio has slightly different needs. A recording engineer will spend most of their time tracking and editing, a mastering engineer sweetens and balances tracks and assembles them into pro-quality finished products, and a film editor or radio producer creates a montage of audio material for broadcast. Many musicians and producers will come across – or, indeed, have performed – one or more of these tasks at some point in their careers.
