Allen & Heath Xone VF-1
As any audiophile will testify, the best filters use only an analogue signal path and a few basic knobs. Mark Cousins gets dark and dirty with the XONE VF-1.

As well as making a name in the world of live and studio consoles, Allen & Heath has also been busy constructing a range of high-quality products for the professional DJ and club market. Its XONE range has so far concentrated on DJ mixers, but the company’s most recent development – the XONE VF-1 – has applications both in the club environment and, more importantly to Music Tech readers, in the project studio. In essence, the XONE VF-1 is a 1U, rackmounted analogue filter that could be used ‘live’ by a DJ (or a laptop-based performing musician) and in the studio to process synths, loops, vocals and more – indeed, anything that benefits from the juicy delights of a real analogue filter.
